Old Sock Reindeer

I thought this might be fun to post in light of this month’s Month of Softies. Here is a sock reindeer my mom made for us many years ago. She was very upset because, somehow, she had made him upside down. We loved him anyway. He may be upside down, but he still has plenty of charm.

Conni, how could she tell?

I think the seam that shaped the face was supposed to go under the nose. She had it above the nose and, because she didn’t have it properly aligned, it made his “hairline” uneven. I thought that added to his personality, but she was really bothered by it because she was such a perfectionist.

I don’t have the pattern she used, and the only reindeer pattern I’ve been able to find shows the red heel as the mouth (just like the original sock monkeys), so I’m wondering if maybe she had it even more upside down than she thought!

Re Old Sock Reindeer
Conni....I have made that same reindeer. Somewhere I have the pattern from a discontinued craft magazine. If I find it (I am still cluttered waiting for Hurricane Rita repairs) I would be happy to share it with you. I named all my reindeer and that just gave them more personality.
My e-mail is maggievh7071@yahoo.com

Your mother did not make the reindeer upside down. She followed the pattern correctly. I made 9 or 10 of these about 20 years ago and this is exactly what they should look like. The pattern came from a magazine called Decorating and Craft Ideas. It was published in 1977. I still have the pattern if you would like it.

Thanks so much for your comment, Pier. I tried to e-mail you but can't get through. Hope you see this message. Thanks for your kind offer to share the reindeer pattern. After my mom died, my sister inherited all of her old magazines – and, as I discovered recently, that magazine was among them – so I have access to the pattern, now. Mom had herself convinced that she had made him wrong! How wonderful that you and your daughter are going to make them together this year! You’ll not only be creating crafts but making great memories…

Conni, Back in July 2005 you had a blog concerning a "Old Sock Reindeer" from Decorating & Crafts Ideas magazine. I would like to get the pattern for this reindeer, which I had made for my neice twenty-plus year ago (She doesn't still have it). Can you tell me the issue it was in so that I can search for it? Nothing on google is the same as the one you pictured and that I had made. Now I have a grandchild of my own and would like to make this again. Thanks.

Sharon, I don't have your e-mail address, so I hope you see this message. My sister has my mom's old craft magazines. I believe this is from the year 1977, but I'm not sure which month. I'm guessing it was probably around the holidays. You should be able to find archives in a library and print the information you need. Hope this helps.

Hi Jillian,
Thanks for visiting my blog. You didn’t leave an email address so I will answer your question, here. I’m sorry I don’t have the pattern, but it was from Decorating & Crafts Ideas magazine from the year 1977 (I think). I’m not sure which month – but you can probably find it in the library. Hope this helps. Good luck!
