Wooly Bear Caterpillar

The wooly bear caterpillar is the larval stage of the Isabella tiger moth (Pyrrharctia isabella).  His body consists of thirteen distinct segments and, according to folklore, the more reddish brown segments there are, the milder the coming winter.  While this little guy seems to be forecasting a mild winter, human weather prognosticators are predicting the opposite.  I'm rooting for the caterpillar!

How pretty and very interestng. We do not have this kind of pretty catipillar in our area, but the very black one. I have heard the same kind of folklore with it as well, just that the more furrier it looks, the more severe winter we will get. LOL I hope your catipellar prediction is accurate!

Oh, do be careful if you handle this guy. It's like handling a cactus!
